Stephen Morrissey’s coffee career began in Rio Coffee Co. on Dublin’s Exchequer Street. He spent a few years training baristas and roasting at Bewley’s on Grafton St, while at the same time completing a degree in Music Composition at DIT.

In 2008 Stephen moved to London to help open Square Mile Coffee Roasters and that year became the first Irish person to win the World Barista Championship in Copenhagen. This led to travelling the world visiting coffee farms, providing education on the merits of specialty coffee, and ultimately a new home in Chicago where Stephen became Director of Education for the renowned Intelligentsia Coffee, and later Director of Marketing and Communications.

Stephen has judged in national barista competitions spanning four continents and today serves on the Advisory Board for World Coffee Events, the governing body that produces events and competitions promoting specialty coffee. He was the co-founder of Coffee Common, a series of consumer-focused educational events that originated at the TED conference in California.

Today Stephen is the Senior Creative Advisor for the Specialty Coffee Association, and is involved in a variety of coffee related projects. He lives in Chicago with his wife Jen and their black lab Regis.

  5. I’ve returned to Ireland after 4 yrs and … I’m tullin ya Antoe … Jaysus, Mareee and Joesuff … what a change !!! Bewleys aren’t pushing drip filter, still aren’t broke, and, with a cautious eye and the intro of no smoking laws, the number of cafes that can do 1/2 decent milk or esp are getting close to the number of pubs that serve a decent pint ! … although we all know that the later will never beat the former … You are the epitome of change that Ireland has seen in the last few years. Congrad’s on the WBC and good luck mate, love your style ! oh, …. and now you’re famous, can you let your fans in on the life you intend on living in the wake of your WBC glory, if you’re not in Manilla getting sunburnt or tossed in a tornado or 2 … 😉
